Transgender Day of Visibility, March 31st, 2016

On March 31, 2009, Rachel Crandall a Michigan-based transgender activist founded Transgender Day of Visibility. It was her idea that there should be a day of visibility, in addition to the Day of Remembrance that mourned the loss of transgender people to hate crimes.

Transgender Day of Visibility takes its participation online through social media campaigns and websites where participants post selfies, personal stories, statistics regarding transgender issues and other content that will help raise awareness and, of course, increase the visibility of transgender people.

This day has spread across the world. Transgender is not an American disease, nor is a punishment from God. It’s a naturally occurring human action. We are humans and to be Transgender, Gay, Lesbian, Intersex, etc., means that we are NORMAL.

Statistics show that many trans students feel unsafe in schools. In public bathrooms, in public, if you will. Suicide rates should not be a factor. One suicide is too high to be acceptable. Being Normal should not be a reason to commit suicide.

Many organizations have taken a stand on this issue. Over the past few years, there has been more visibility of the transgender community. But it is still not enough. Ignorant people are still fighting off the use of bathrooms, children attending schools, and employment discrimination.

We can all help become part of the solution. And not be part of the problem. If you’re LGBTQIA+ don’t give your back to the Transgender community. I’m sure they’re not giving their back towards us. Even if we are all different and we have different issues. We are still fighting those who are insecure about their own sexuality and discriminate against ALL LGBTQIA+ communities.

There are ways you can help.

Imagine a world where being NORMAL was accepted.
